CLE – The Integrative Client-Centered Model: client counseling for lawyers part II

This is the second of a three-part series on client counseling for lawyers with the Integrative Client-Centered Model (ICCM), on March 6, 2026. Each part is two hours and offers two CLE credits. It’s helpful to take the sessions in order but not necessary as this series will be repeated next quarter. In each part of this series, we will touch on all 5 sections of the ICCM framework, with a focus on certain sections and components.

The ICCM provides a full suite of counseling skills. It is a framework and component model designed to incorporate and organize your existing skills, and help you organize new skills you acquire.

The ICCM framework:

The human element
Relationship building skills
Case and narrative building skills
Plan building and execution
Reflecting, regrouping and re-executing

CLE session topics

In Part II we’ll focus on some neuroscience, emotions, emotion regulation, and specific techniques for case and narrative building skills.

For the human element, we’ll touch on neuroscience for a foundation to think about emotions. There’s a difference between emotions, feelings, and affect and we’ll parse those out and why it’s helpful to know. We’ll follow that with reflecting skills to support regulation. The relationship component will offer some tips for getting out in front of emotional dysregulation. In the case and narrative building segment we’ll cover seven topics to help clients stay on track with the case plan.
